chi squared distribution

This is a computed quantity, which measures the goodness-of-fit of a fitting function f to data. For example, if we have a set of data y_i corresponding to values x_i of a variable C, the chi-square is given by 

where s_i is the standard deviation of y_i and a is a parameter in the function f(x_i; a) which is varied to optimise the fit.
