Spontaneous fission

Neutrons are produced directly in the fission process at the rate of about 4 per fission.  Although fission occurs in only about 3% of the decays, the neutron production rate is 2.3×10¹² N s^-1 g^-1 of ²⁵²Cf, making it a prolific compact source.
