The McTaggert long counter
Previous Up Next

  • Based on a BF3 detector at the centre of as moderating medium, but directional.
  • The detector is designed to be long enough that, at whatever neutron energy, by the time it has penetrated into the inner paraffin moderator, then the detector will appear the same to the neutron and will be detected with the same efficiency.
  • It is designed as a flat response detector for neutron physics work.
  • The outer shield of paraffin and inner shield of boron have the effect of only allowing neutrons from the right hand side of the figure to enter the inner sanctum.
