Ballistic deficit

The bottom curve is the pulse shape observed with a practical time constant and the upper output is from a shaping time constant very much larger than needed to allow full charge collection. The difference in pulse height is referred to as ballistic deficit.

The ballistic deficit varies with time and hence inevitably leads to a loss of peak resolution in the final spectrum.
