Spallation
- An important intense source of neutrons used for large scale
industrial and research applications.
- This uses a high current of very energetic particles directed onto
a large, cooled target of a heavy element, usually uranium.
- The range of a 1 GeV proton is so large that there is a high
probability of a nuclear collision and an average of about 30-35
neutrons are produced per incident proton.
